Purpose of this Document

This document provides guidance on the "Scope of Practice" for SBHS health and wellness coaching members, their potential employers and clients.

SBHS Registered Health and Wellness Coaches must adhere strictly to the stipulated Scope of Practice specific to health coaching. SBHS assumes no responsibility or affiliation for SBHS Registered Health and Wellness Coach offering additional health or wellness services which fall under a separate scope of practice.

By behaving responsibly and ethically, SBHS health and wellness coaches not only protect themselves and their clients, but also their practice and the health and wellness coaching profession.

Understanding ‘Scope of Practice’

The term ‘scope of practice’ defines the limits and boundaries of health and wellness coaching activities, encompassing the rules for engaging in health and wellness coaching. This includes various activities such as blogging, conducting webinars, group or individual coaching, speaking at events, and communication at forum, meetings and conferences with colleagues and other healthcare professionals.

One’s scope of practice is determined by the knowledge, skills, and experience one possesses. It is composed of the tasks one can perform professionally, provided one is competent to do so lawfully, safely, and effectively.

Holding Multiple Credentials

If a SBHS Registered Health and Wellness Coach also holds additional qualifications (e.g., nutritionist, nurse, psychologist), they may provide guidance in those areas but must remain within the scope of each profession. It is essential that these roles are clearly defined and insured.

Informed Consent and Professional Responsibility

In cases where multiple services are offered, the health and wellness coach must ensure informed consent, clearly stating the scope of practice for each service, and operate within the appropriate boundaries.

Collaboration with Health Care Practitioners

SBHS Registered Health and wellness coaches should collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, dietitians, and therapists, to deliver an effective and holistic care.

Insurance Requirements

All SBHS Registered Health and Wellness Coaches must maintain insurance coverage that aligns with their qualifications.
